I had a lovely moment this week when I sold a print from my online shop, and I didn't have to do anything. Usually, when I sell something, I have a whole set of tasks to do to get the thing into the post. But this time, because Shopify is connected to The Print Space it all happens by magic/technology, the next day they print the plot and pop it into the post.
Now all I need is for that to happen 150 times a month and I can give up the day job.
I got an email notification that the domain I bought was up for renewal; flesh.network, once more I said yes to it, because, who knows I may get around to it at some point.
It was bought with the plan of making a joke site, trying to sell the concept of meeting other people in, gasp, the flesh, as though this was a totally new idea invented by a couple of clueless dudes in some start-up.
The "joke" being that everyone was so used to meeting online that you could play "hey, ever thought about creating a network of friends that you meet in the flesh? Well now you can with flesh.network", straight-faced. The domain being intentionally awful.
Then Covid happened, and, well, there's still a joke in there, but perhaps a different one.
flesh.network, is such a Cronenberg level of terrible that now and again I play the game of looking up other flesh dot domain names: hover.com/domains/results?q=flesh and guess the type of business that would exist for each one.
flesh.supplies, flesh.construction, flesh.dentist or flesh.loans? I see that flesh.hosting is on sale at the moment, but flesh.host is cheaper.
Related, skin.tattoo is available, as is and.ink which is tempting for the (wildcard) domain of pen.and.ink but the price is too much for that kinda joke.
Over Christmas and New Year someone got hold of my company credit card details and ran up just over £4k in charges. The band reversed all that in a few days and sent me a new card.
I was told that when I next use the card and it asked me for the secret verified by visa word I should click a link to change it. As part of the "You must take steps to mitigate fraud" process.
Two weeks later and I still haven't seen the verified interstitial, I hope the bank doesn't tell me off before I get a chance.
Website news; a while back I added Hit Counters to the pages because it thought it was a bit of retro computer fun. Just like the traditional old web, they've broken for no apparent reason, so I guess I'll have to fix them at some point.
Each of these blog posts and the whole site is also done in good ol' handwritten HTML; I don't know, it seemed like a good idea at the time. I at least have "server-side includes" to save a bit of effort.
One thing that was always a pain was starting a new post. I'd have to create the folders in the right place, update a couple of files and start a new HTML file. So the other week I finally got around to creating a script that would do all of that for me at a push of a button, and, it's so much better!
Not only that but another bane of my life was adding the images into the mark-up. I'd always forget just how I'd do it, especially when I have two or three side-by-side. I'd go back and copy & paste from previous posts.
Snippets were the answer, about time I added snippets to VSC, been meaning to look into it for a while now. Who knew that automating computers could make your life easier?!
